Guiding Families Through the Addiction & Recovery Process

Addiction's Impact on the Family

Addiction, whether to drugs or alcohol, can significantly disrupt the family unit – causing harmful damage with long-lasting effects.

Waypoint Recovery Center works closely with clients and their families to deliver a comprehensive treatment plan and recovery roadmap that sets clients and their families on a path to success. To do so effectively, Waypoint provides several ways for the family to engage.

We treat the whole system

After Admission

What Happens After My Loved-One is Admitted

We recognize that for many families, having a loved-one enters residential treatment can be a scary and uncertain time.

While specific questions can be directed toward the treatment team, Waypoint also offers services and support groups to better educate families on the treatment and recovery process.

Contact With Client

Clients and their families have limited contact during the first two weeks of treatment. During this period, direct contact is discouraged while clients focus their sole attention on the early days of sobriety. This method is proven effective for both the client and their families.

Early treatment is an important time for clients to immerse themselves in the process without distraction or interruption.

For the family, this period serves as a much-needed decompression period, where families can relax and take a breath knowing that their loved one is safe receiving the help they need.

Members of a client’s immediate family can receive weekly updates about their loved one’s treatment from our clinical team during this time, so long as the client signs a release of information. In the event of an emergency during treatment, families will be notified immediately.

Weekly Family Orientation Group

We recognize that for many families, having a loved-one enter residential treatment can be a scary and uncertain time. Every Tuesday evening, Waypoint Recovery Center hosts a Family Orientation Zoom call for families of admitted clients. Weekly Family Orientation Group’s are available to families of currently admitted clients. Details for the meeting will be provided by a member of the Waypoint team. During these one-hour orientation calls, we will:

Review the core principals and offerings of the residential program

Provide information on scheduling, residential life at Waypoint, and amenities offered

Review the consequences and dangers of a loved one leaving treatment early

Outline the impact letter writing process and its significance

Field and answer questions from families about treatment when possible

Impact Letters & Support

Impact letters are an important therapeutic tool used during counseling sessions. For family members, impact letters provide a structured, compassionate way to express how their loved one’s addiction has affected them emotionally, physically, and relationally. For clients, impact letters provide a glimpse into the impact their addiction has had on their family. Waypoint Recovery Center believes that impact letters can help effectively communicate feelings honestly while also encouraging accountability, healing, and positive change.

Waypoint Recovery Center is committed to providing families with support on writing impact letters, including:

Reviewing the impact letter process during family orientation meetings

Speaking individually with families about the letter writing process

Offering a structured template outlining key sections of an effective impact letter

While the process may bring up feelings of overwhelm and uncertainty, Impact letters offer a controlled, clinically supervised, and safe space for open communication between clients and their families

What Services & Supports Are Available

Individual Family Sessions

As a resource to better educate, guide, and support families during their loved-one’s recovery process, Waypoint Recovery Center offers individual family sessions for clients enrolled in the residential program.

Offered during the last two weeks of stay, individual family therapy sessions are coordinated between the client and the counselor.

During individual family sessions, clients and family members may discuss a variety of topics, including current progress being made in treatment, review family expectations for the client after discharge, and align discharge planning for ongoing treatment.

Weekly Family Support Group

Oftentimes the best support and reassurance for families of a client in Waypoint’s treatment program is the support of other families. To build and encourage this support network, Waypoint Recovery Center provides a weekly family support group for current family members and family members whose loved ones have graduated from the program. Details for the weekly Saturday afternoon meeting can be found below:
Weekly Family Support Group (Virtual Zoom Meeting)
Saturdays from 1:00 P.M. – 2:00 P.M. EST

ID: 217 983 6763 | Password: waypoint

During the support group, families can expect to learn more about the experience of current families and families of graduates as they navigate the recovery process with their loved ones. These groups often provide a soundboard for questions, comments, concerns, and even frustrations. By offering this group, we hope to deliver a safe place for families to connect with one another.

Family Discharge Planning

Discharge planning and the family’s role in discharge are crucial components of a client’s treatment and recovery plan. Clients and their families who have a strong discharge plan pave the way for greater success in recovery. Throughout the client stay in residential treatment; clients and their families will work with Waypoint Recovery Center’s clinical team discharge planner to determine the best course of action for continuing care and support following discharge from the program. Options that may be recommended can include:

  • Waypoint Recovery Center’s Intensive Outpatient Program
  • Traditional outpatient services
  • Placement in a sober living environment
  • Individual therapy referral

Recommendations for discharge planning, including appropriate care options will be determined by the client’s clinical team to the discharge planner, who will walk families through the next steps.

Staying Connected

Receiving Updates on a Family Member at Waypoint

Receiving updates on a loved-one’s treatment progress and well-being is a normal part of the recovery process. Treatment teams work hard to ensure families remain updated on important developments and progress on their loved ones. For families whose clients have signed a release of information to receive updates on their care, the treatment team will provide weekly updates on their loved-one’s progress. If families wish to receive updates outside of those weekly calls, there are multiple ways families can reach out.

Email Updates

The best way to receive updates is by emailing this dedicated email address for families to utilize. When emailing, please be sure to include specific questions if you have them, along with our full name. Our family update email is checked daily, and in most cases, someone will respond to your email within 24 hours of delivery. In most cases, responses are much quicker.

Phone Calls

Calls from family members to our facility phone are routed to the nurse’s station, who may be able to speak with family members or call back later.

Please note that our nurse’s station is very busy, and our nurse may not always be able to answer if they are engaged in caring for our clients.

Assigned Counselor

For families whose clients have signed a release of information to receive updates on their care, treatment team will provide weekly updates on their loved-one’s progress.

Calls can also be made directly to their counselor. When clients are admitted to Waypoint, family members will receive the phone number of their loved ones assigned counselor.
